If a machine can convincingly imitate humanity–can persuade a human being of its kinship–then what makes it inhuman? What, after all, is human thought but a series of electrical impulses?

About This Quote

I would categorize this quote as being about the nature of humanity. It is interesting to note that, in this particular expression, the author is writing about an artificial intelligence. The author goes on to note the possible outcome of the development of an artificial intelligence that can convincingly imitate humanity. He has a point.

Who are we if not the sum of our physical components? Our brains are made up of neurons, which are themselves made up of molecules, which are themselves made up of atoms, which are themselves made up of particles that exist at the smallest level known to science. We might as well think of ourselves as a physical system as opposed to a thinking system. Perhaps it’s fitting that such a simple insight into our nature should be stated by one who had such an intimate knowledge of our brains and who was so well versed in the workings of neurons and chemistry and physics and all those other sciences we humans tend to associate with our sense of self and identity.
